We were notified today by Rusty Hensen that the San Miguel de Allende airport is almost ready to be officially re-opened. Rusty and a team of other pilots and local businessmen have worked diligently to convince the state and local government as well as local businesses to invest in the airport to provide it with a suitable runway, ramp area and fencing.

Having an airport in San Miguel de Allende will allow visiting pilots the opportunity to visit this magical town without long commutes from other airports further away.

Excellent. As a frequent visitor I really see the need for a local airport.
When is it estimated to be complete? Will you (Rick) post updates?

Just got back from a trip to the airport at San Miguel (XSMA). The runway is in good condition and security seems good.

One should do their home work and study the photos, topography and vertical obstructions prior to landing there. It is very doable. I'll be back.

Rusty Henson was very helpful in providing information about the airport.

I traveled to Mexico at the first of November and found the San Miguel (XSMA) airport was closed due to construction. Any news of anticipated completion time?

Hi Kipp, we will call Ruty and get an update. It appears that they are really investing in the airport which is a great thing for general aviation and for San Miguel de Allende.

Rusty Henson, who is the driving force behind the San Miguel Airport, has informed us that the airport should re-open mid-December if everything procedes on schedule.

The following is a description provided by Rusty Henson of the work being done to the airport at San Miguel de Allende. We have also posted the pictures sent to us by Rusty in the image gallery.

"We are placing 15 cm of compacted road base (base hidraulico) and a chip seal coat on 1100 m x 20 m. We are placing 5 m wide shoulders on both sides of compacted dirt.
We are in the process of asking the State government for 7 MM pesos to pave a total of 1500 meters x 20 meters and a large parking ramp.

Rusty"
